I don't know how many people are actualy waiting for us to release our scripts to Popotan volume 1, but it's backordered 2-4 weeks at CDJapan and YesAsia doesn't have it. Trust me, as soon as we get it we'll get to work fixing up the scripts and giving them to all of you. (It would be ironic if the reason it was backordered was because of all the people out there who ordered it from CDJapan in anticipation of us releasing our scripts.)

Popotan 12 has been posted to our distibution page. This concludes the series fansubbing, and we hope you have enjoyed it. If you did, please do purchase the R2 DVDs when they come out, to support the artists and multinational corporations (well, buy it cuz you like it). And remember that we will take files down as our timed scripts to the DVDs are released.

As a correction to the previous post, according to CDJapan, Popotan volume 1 was released on friday, but our copy won't ship until around thursday due to CDJapan's policy of always grouping an entire order into one shipment. (Admittedly, it does save us money on shipping.) The normal version is here. There's also a version which includes a little Ai statuette, but that's not the one I'm getting. If you really like the show, and there are about two thousand of you who seem to, I hope you'll support the creators by buying the official DVDs. You can't use the lack of english subtitles as an excuse anymore--we're giving them to you!

Popotan 11 has just been posted on our torrent page.

For those of you wondering why we haven't been getting any Takahashi Rumiko Theater done, I'll say two words: Diablo II. Not to mention the lack of DVDs for this show puts a strain on our group policy - to get the DVDs and release timed scripts for them.

Popotan DVD 1 (for region 2) is scheduled to release September 30, and we are about to place an order for them. Please support (well, subsidize) this purchase by donating via PayPal - paying for quality scripts is worth it!

Popotan 10 is now out (for almost eight hours now). Why oh why won't the others blog our releases?

Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Popotan 9 has been released, three days behind schedule.

In a state of the group statement - It appears that we have actually found a small but loyal following. But in the stark reality of download counts, I must admit I'm discouraged... We Suck prides itself on having moderately accurate translations and timing, without all the eye-candy that dominates fansubs today. A source of translations and (in the future) scripts for fans of shows, where the horrors of "mass naked child events" will not occur. Now, granted, we make mistakes sometimes. But We Suck does not mean we don't care about whether our work is well received or appreciated.

Now our small team is in the fansubbing activity for the enjoyment of what we do. Our translators like the stories and episodes we translate, and our encoder enjoys the challenge of making a good video for distribution. But like many start-up businesses, the modern fansub market, whose currency is bandwidth and profits are counted in download numbers, has ignored our message of simplicity, and has shunned us to our little corner.

We will continue to translate and subtitle Popotan and Takahashi Rumiko Theater, until either licensing or conclusion. If you like our work, please drop a message to one of us, all of whom lurk at various times on #animecentral. Or, please help us subsidize the DVDs that we purchase so that quality subtitles can be prepared for you should you want to purchase Region 2 DVDs. Let us know that you too want to see us continue with our fansub efforts.

The 4cc code for Popotan 8 in the file is DX50. It should be XVID. If you have the 4cc changer tool that comes with XviD (and you should, since we've been telling you to download XviD) you should probably change the code to XVID. It will get rid of artifacts that appear, among other places, on the show's title screen.

Popotan 8 is now available on the bittorrents, made from certified 100% recycled electrons. Slightly smaller than 175mb, so I'm probably gonna start aiming for 140s on future releases.

I'm kinda tired and don't seem to have anything particularly witty to say at the moment. That having been said, we have released Popotan 7.

End of Transmission.

Popotan 6 is out, on the torrent page as usual. I apologize for the bad encode this time around. The main things you'll note are the colour bleeding and general quality loss (ringing and blocking) in parts of the episode. I hoped episode 3 would have been the last bad work I did - I guess I was wrong.

The encoder is learning. Albeit very slowly.

Popotan 6 is out, on the torrent page as usual. I apologize for copping out on the Unagi-tan preview this time, but I didn't want a repeat of the preview for episode 4.

Saturday, August 16, 2003

Now out: Popotan 5. As promised, with OP/ED lyrics transcribed/translated from the lyrics sheet that came with the single. Oh, and the ED translation scans in english, so feel free to sing along.

Tuesday, August 12, 2003

I'm holding in my hot little hands a freshly-opened copy of the Popotan OP/ED e.p., so episode 5 will have correct romaji and translations (in as much as any translations I do are correct), but no Kanji or Karaoke (because they are pretty silly). Who'da thunk S-U-K-I had the word "Technopunk" in it?

We have just released Popotan 4 and hopefully we can actually get new seeds by the time we leave for dinner. It's the Pizza Nova near the Math Comfy Lounge, you'll recognize us immediately as the guys that look like tehy Suck.

Now, we did warn you that our Unagi-tan preview might have been a little off. As it turns out, we weren't even close. Episode 4 is a Meah episode, not an Unagi episode. It's also translated and timed, though encoding will have to wait as there's another show in the pipeline that will get priority. (Also, our encoder has two exams today, although since we encode on a laptop and meet in person to work on stuff, we can still get work done. Expect two or three releases over the next few days.

Saturday, August 02, 2003

Popotan 3 is now complete and being transfered by SneakerNet.
We are not responsible for any lost bets, mental anguish or rolling heads as a result of the poor translation of Unagi's next episode preview. Batteries not included.

Friday, August 01, 2003

Popotan 3 is mostly translated, and has to get timed. So you all know, we will have a new encoder, ie. not me, for this episode, and probably subsequent releases. If you tried to download eps. 1 and 2 during their peak, you know how bad my bandwidth can be, so you'll be pleased to know that I have a high bandwidth link to the encoder. It's called, "I bicycle to his house with a CD-RW." His computer is probably about 3 times as fast as mine, and I'm pretty sure he knows how to get more out of XviD than I do.
I've fixed up a mistake in the OP which I caught 4 hours after release, without having to watch the episode again. (I think I was distracted by the seeds in the background or something.) I bet there's still bugs in the OP, but I'm going to let them sit until the OP/ED single comes out. (The closing will remain unsubbed until then.) Just so as you know, the single is released August 6th, that's next wednesday, and will be shipping hopefully on that day, if not sooner. If the disc looks like it can arrive on friday or saturday, I'll hold off episode 4 for its arrival; otherwise, I'm pretty sure it'll arrive in time for episode 5. (Bearing in mind that next weekend is Otakon, so the point might be moot by then.)
I am a hair's breadth from giving up on the Unagi-tan previews, which is a shame. I'm shure you've notished how Unagi-tan talksh like thish. Well, she really talks like that in Japanese, too. This is immensely frustrating for me, who has to guess at what she's trying to say. It wasn't too hard last time, with the magical girl thing going on, but this time it could be just about anything.
Anyways, Popotan 3, late tonight or early tomorrow, unless something horrihble happens. See you then.

Something seems to have gone wrong with the Blogger to the effect of me losing the text of my first post here, so I'll be briefer this time. We Suck came into being on Saturday morning when we released Popotan episodes 1 and 2, 5 hours apart. I really like the show, so barring licensing, we'll keep subbing it through to the end. We're also looking at other series to sub, primarily shows that aren't heavily subbed already. (It would be pointless to add another Ultra Maniac or Onegai Twins to the mix.) I hope you like what we do, and I apologize in advance for any mistakes we make along the way. Then again, with a name like, "We Suck," how much can you really expect?

<Torgen> Next I'll claim that my translations are perfect, and any apparent errors are really elaborate typos.
<MSH> typos introduced by the keyboard of course, not by you!
<Torgen> naturally.
<_bla_> Torgen: why is group called "we suck" then not "my keyboard sucks" ?
<Torgen> typo.
<Torgen> Tyreal: not enough room in your nick for |sucks?
<Tyreal|Seeking|Enlightenment> crap!

<Tyreal|Sucks> Torgen: how DID you do those DVD type subs by the way :P
<Tyreal|Sucks> just got fonts that looked like that, or used an actual dvd subtitling proggie
<Torgen> It's Arial.
<Torgen> I used TextSub.
<Tyreal|Sucks> ahh
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Torgen: THERE YOU ARE
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Torgen: do you really think I suck ;_;
<Torgen> no.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> oh good
<Torgen> I was a little worried that it'd be interpreted that way, though.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Torgen: nah, I just laughed for about 2 hours
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> When I started getting pm's about it
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> "You're from we-suck"
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> apparently we-suck is popular with the french
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Don't ask me why XD
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> They say they want to "worship you"
<Torgen> I'll put you in parenths next time so it's clear you just post the raws.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> no, put Tyreal|Sucks in there
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> I'm amused by this now, I kind of like it XD
<Shouta> <WeSuck> You = my bitch
<Torgen> Yeah, it's like taking the ghost suit of the ghost lego man and putting it on the astronaut lego man.
<Torgen> The ghost lego man is now just a normal lego man with a featureless face.
<Torgen> while the astronaut gets to look out through the ghost suit's eyeholes.
<Spyre> Torgen that has to be the best analogy ever.
<Spyre> Thats EXACTLY what its like!

<kara|hw> i told crustol...

<Torgen> Think you could co-produce some Gundam show with cat girls in it?
<Jekichu-clone> gundam....cat girls...
<Jekichu-clone> ...
<Jekichu-clone> ....
<Jekichu-clone> no
<Torgen> Like have cat-girls (and boys, and women, and men) instead of Newtypes or Coordinators...
<Torgen> or whatever other gundam series had.
<Jekichu-clone> laf, thats straight up pornographic
<Torgen> think of the ratings!
<Jekichu-clone> rawwwrrrr
<PyRC> basket, if everything is recursive, maybe there are no fansubs.
<Torgen> And Ensei doesn't sound like I expected him to when I first saw him...
<Torgen> He looks all gruff...
<Torgen> and he sounds so comical.
<arcImpulse> and you expected...
<Torgen> him to sound all gruff, like those assassins...
<Torgen> but he sounds uncultured;
<Torgen> not rogueish.
<Torgen> it's like, if he said "wanna come over and watch the game?" I'd take a moment to realize that was an anachronism.
<arcImpulse> if you think he sounds weird... just wait till we get to Eccentric Kou
<arcImpulse> and you'd be like...holy anachronism~~
<Torgen> what, does Kou sound like a robot or something?
<arcImpulse> damn, I couldn't fool you, ne?
