Episode 3 of Tale of Saiunkoku has been released. Now doing some performance testing on my new computer - a mild gain on encode speed, I suppose.

YAYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Thanks I've been waiting for weeks. BTW, i found a site that has the translations blogged, perhaps if you spoke to them, they could help you speed up the translating process seeing as how it's pretty tedious with work and all for you.

http://shadow.randomfandom.com/saiunkoku/index.htm

Hope it helps!!!! keep up the awesome fansubs!!! We Saiunkoku addicts appreciate your hard work!!!!

What a fantastic job you guys did on this release! I was amazed at how clear and crisp the video was, and your subs are grammatically correct and easy to read. Well done on a wonderful fansub, I'll be looking forward to future releases from this group!

Tale of Saiunkoku, thank you thank you thank you

Every time Ryuuki refers to himself as 'we', I kept thinking of multiple personality disorder. :D Nevertheless, good job in releasing this.

(I second what jessie says - the owner of the site is pretty knowledgeable as I believe she has read the novels, and could help out with your releases! :D)

@anonymous who posted about Ryuuki referring to himself as 'We':

As the Emperor of Saiunkoku, Ryuuki refers to himself using the pronoun 余 (romaji: yo). This pronoun is usually used by esteemed men - emperors, for example - to refer to themselves. As such, Torgen and I have decided that the most appropriate way to interpret this pronoun is to use the Royal we.

@Jessie, re: Saiunkoku translation blog:
The unofficial policy of We Suck Fansubs is that we do not use entire episode translations from external sources, preferring to perform translation work on our own . Not only is this because we are strongly opposed to plagiarism, it is also because we would like to build our own Japanese skills while working on our translations. (It is for this second reason that we never use Japanese-to-Korean or Japanese-to-Chinese translations for our work, even though they tend to be released significantly early, possibly even at zero-day turnaround time. In the case of the latter, Chinese is actually my mother tongue and it would be extremely tempting for me to grab a Chinese fansub and then translate from that instead; however, my Japanese skills won't improve in doing so, and I would be kicked out of the group.)

doh, I think y ou misunderstood me. In my post, i simply suggested that they might be able to help...didn't say plagiarize...that's why i wrote "perhaps if you spoke to them...they could help" and the site had japanese - english episode translations...sigh what a harsh response...just trying to help...didn't know you were attempting to learn Japanese. My apologies

lavalyn said...

Jessie: we appreciate your spirit in which you offer your assistance, but our team has our own reasons for doing things the way we do. We have never, and will never, depend on third-party translations to speed us through - for one, you'd notice the change in written tone and it'd be inconsistent across the episodes. Heck, we already avoid watching other fansubs of the same series to make sure we don't make the same translations mistakes as some other groups would.

We're pretty aggressive about keeping the operations as clean-room as you can possibly get. It's just part of our modus operandi.

arcImpulse said...

@Jessie:
Perhaps my original post was a little stiff and on the harsh side - so I should clarify. You don't have to apologize; perhaps this is your first time downloading a release by We Suck, and so probably aren't clear on the group's ethical stand and politics.

While you are trying to help by posting the address of the translation blog, the fact remains that We Suck has always had a strong tradition of bringing English-translated anime to the fans through the group's own efforts. Therefore, we avoid using other people and groups' translations of works that we are fansubbing, even if the use of the other translations is for the purposes of guidance and not explicit plagiarism. To use other groups' translations would make our work a joint production - and we have explicitly mentioned that we don't participate in joint productions in Section 6b) of our Group Policy Statement - "The group does not engage in joint productions or in other ways assist the activities of other fansub groups with weaker ethical standards than its own. The determination of whether a group's stanards are sufficient may include criteria not described in this policy."

And even if we are not actively avoiding the use of that translation blog as assistance material, what if the person who prepares the translations for the blog is also busy with a job and other life commitments? Then the episode would not come out any faster than if we didn't use the translation blog.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience and misunderstanding that I may have caused in my previous post. But in a nutshell, we won't be able to accept your offer of help for translating Saiunkoku.

As such, Torgen and I have decided that the most appropriate way to interpret this pronoun is to use the Royal we.

Ah, I see now. Thank you for clarifying. Though it's utterly distracting at times; what is your opinion about putting a note about the royal 'we' in a translator's note instead, while have Ryuuki refer to himself as 'I'? I'm not pushing or anything, just curious about this suggestion, no worries. :)

lavalyn said...

The use of the Royal Plural is fairly well established in the English language - it sometimes sounds a bit bizarre when it's clear the speaker is using it in a personal context - but not bizarre enough to justify big yellow text explaining English literary intricacies. :)

again, i don't understand the sudden defensiveness but:
1) I just joined yesterday so have not as of yet had time to read the policy statements
2) i thought perhaps, after reading your post about being busy, that it might save you time and effort being as fansubs aren't easy
3) it was just an opinion, not an offer, I'm not of the level to actually participate and help eitherways.

again, i apologize being as I've only signed up and noticed this fansub group...one day prior. I simply thought it was a good thing to relate to others in my addiction but I see perhaps it only calls for severe critique. I'll apologize one last time for not reading all your rules and regulations within the first 24 hours. I'll make sure to read up and keep within the guidelines. Can we call a truce now?

lavalyn said...

@Jessie: We needed a truce? Frankly, I think that I should be at least saying sorry! We are always happy to see more anime fans, and more fans of the works of We Suck Fansubs. If any statements we have made seem rude, inconsiderate, or any such negative thing, it is we that must apologize.

It is not our place to judge anybody for their interests in anime, only our place to bring more Japanese animation works to the English-speaking world, and hopefully spur a bit more international interest in the works of this nature. We would very much like viewers of Suck translation works to have an understanding of our policies, their intent, and their effects - but we do not require any such reading.

We hope you continue to enjoy the works of the anime production industry, whether through We Suck Fansubs, or through another fansub group, or through the North American licensees to these productions. Please do buy DVDs of any shows you particularly liked, of course.

Anonymous said...

lavalyn: Fair enough. :D All right, that's enough of poking; I'd like to state that Suck has my full support and appreciation in subbing this series. <3 Please keep up the good work!

Can I just be another person saying thank you, thank you for picking up SaiMono ^^?

Anonymous said...

re: Royal we - usage

I hail you for using it, because I would not be surprised if the makers at some point let Ryuuki use some other pronoun to make it clear how much closer he becomes to his temporary wife. It also shows his distant situation and made his jealousy of Seiran in episode 3 stand out more.

I consistently have been getting your versions of any anime you have picked up since you showed up (first because you were the only ones who were doing Uninhabited Planet Survive! and then just because you're good). There's We-Suck, Lunar, Iichan (for Emma only), Hikari no Kiseki, AonE and AKeep for me at the top of my list and I thank all these fansub groups for sticking around for so long and keeping up the quality work.

I buy the DVDs when I can get them (and if SaiMono is licensed will do so), but with these groups I also keep the subs, because I often like them better.

Now for a bit of criticism: I do NOT like the current English Karaoke font in the opening, heh.

I am glad someone is doing this series. It's quite amusing. It's funny how she just realized the emperor is actually smart.

Anonymous said...

I really, really appreciate your great work. I wondered how come you people knew so much about old Chinese political system. Now, I know at least one of you had a Chinese background. It makes me even happier to watch the show. I love your subs and the quality of the images. Splendid, splendid! Thank you very much.

Anonymous said...

Thank u for subbing such a promising series .^_^. looking forward to the next episode.

Anonymous said...

Out of curiosity, does your group have any intention of opening up an IRC channel?

Torgen said...

We've been around almost three years so far without an IRC channel of our own and it hasn't been a problem, so I'd have to say no.

Anonymous said...

Thanks a lot! That's the perfect gift for my b day :) please keep up your work on this series!

It really beats me why it lags.. Anyone have any idea? Just FYI.. i tried using Windows Media Player.. BSplayer.. WinAmp.. and i have the latest KLM-Lite codec + CCCP codec on.. so it beats me why this is the only series from your FANSUB that lags... If anyone know.. pls advice.. appreciate bunch!

Cheers!

<Torgen> Next I'll claim that my translations are perfect, and any apparent errors are really elaborate typos.
<MSH> typos introduced by the keyboard of course, not by you!
<Torgen> naturally.
<_bla_> Torgen: why is group called "we suck" then not "my keyboard sucks" ?
<Torgen> typo.

<Tyreal|Enlightenment|Sucks> phew
<Tyreal|Sucks> Torgen: how DID you do those DVD type subs by the way :P

<Torgen> It's Arial.
<Torgen> I used TextSub.
<Tyreal|Sucks> ahh

<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Torgen: do you really think I suck ;_;
<Torgen> no.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> oh good
<Torgen> I was a little worried that it'd be interpreted that way, though.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Torgen: nah, I just laughed for about 2 hours
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> When I started getting pm's about it
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> "You're from we-suck"
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> apparently we-suck is popular with the french
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> Don't ask me why XD
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> They say they want to "worship you"
<Torgen> I'll put you in parenths next time so it's clear you just post the raws.
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> no, put Tyreal|Sucks in there
<Tyreal|Work|Sucks> I'm amused by this now, I kind of like it XD
<Shouta> <WeSuck> You = my bitch
<Torgen> Yeah, it's like taking the ghost suit of the ghost lego man and putting it on the astronaut lego man.
<Torgen> The ghost lego man is now just a normal lego man with a featureless face.
<Torgen> while the astronaut gets to look out through the ghost suit's eyeholes.
<Spyre> Torgen that has to be the best analogy ever.
<Spyre> Thats EXACTLY what its like!

<Jekichu-clone> no
<Torgen> Like have cat-girls (and boys, and women, and men) instead of Newtypes or Coordinators...
<Torgen> or whatever other gundam series had.
<Jekichu-clone> laf, thats straight up pornographic
<Torgen> think of the ratings!
<Jekichu-clone> rawwwrrrr
<PyRC> basket, if everything is recursive, maybe there are no fansubs.
<Torgen> And Ensei doesn't sound like I expected him to when I first saw him...

<arcImpulse> and you expected...
<Torgen> him to sound all gruff, like those assassins...
<Torgen> but he sounds uncultured;
<Torgen> not rogueish.
<Torgen> it's like, if he said "wanna come over and watch the game?" I'd take a moment to realize that was an anachronism.
<arcImpulse> if you think he sounds weird... just wait till we get to Eccentric Kou
<arcImpulse> and you'd be like...holy anachronism~~
<Torgen> what, does Kou sound like a robot or something?
<arcImpulse> damn, I couldn't fool you, ne?
