IRC and IRC bots are not necessary. I see fundamentals in ¨we suck¨. It's working and working effectively.
IRC -> waste of time
Fewer people working -> faster release
No bots, no hosting -> zero hosting cost
"we suck" did a real job promoting anime
Additionally, as noted by Dattebayo...
<insaine2k> think about, there are 600+ people who hammer the bots. ~ download speed (I'm winging it) is 375kb/s for people with broadband. There are only what? 10 slots on the bot? 10 times 8 minutes is already over an hour wait for the people who are in queue slots. If you leave BT on, it won't take much longer.

Whenever a new Karin comes out I end up hosting
a torrent on my dual cpu box on the highest speed
connection I have and keep an eye on the peers.
You can always seem to tell when most people have
gotten it (after about sharing out 10 gigs or so) but
I leave it up for the stragglers since it's a holiday
here in the U.S. anyway. So I'll be sharing out 8 for
the rest of the long weekend.
I don't see IRC and bots being necessary either.
I'm just happy that we have a fast, good pipeline
to this work without too much hassle.

Bakaman here. I was about to email you about Karin 8, asking if anything was done differently than Karin 1-7, when I saw your post saying that you encoded it this time yourself :) Well, the reason why I'm writing is, I own a Divx-certified home DVD player (LG DVB-418) which plays Divx files directly (either from a DVD-R or from memory card slots that the player has). It was no problem playing Karin 1-7 on the player directly right after download (or any other Divx anime or J-drama). But as soon as I put in Karin #8, it went crazy. It started OK but after a few seconds, the audio continued, while the video froze, and when the video would occaisonally start up again, the video and audio were wildly out of sync with each other. Multiple times I tried playing it, same problem.
At first I thought my player was going buggy and maybe it was the memory card slot's fault, so I made a DVD+RW disk, but the same problem. I said "eh? what gives?" and then fired up Karin 7 (and #6) to see if the player was breaking down. But those worked just fine, as they always had.
Mind you, this isn't a complaint post, it's just an FYI. The file works OK on my computer, and using TMPEGE I was able to convert it from the Divx AVI to MPEG2 to watch on my TV. I'm not sure what you might have done differently than Lavalyn, but wanted to let you know that for whatever reason, Karin #8 won't play right on my Divx-certified home DVD player, whereas all the previous episodes (and so far, all other Divx anime and jdorama) will.
That little mystery aside, wanted to say thanks again for all the great work. You guys do such a good job, and seem to do it only hours after it comes out in Japan! Thanks again, and looking forward to Ep 9 (looks like Anju will be in the next one).

bakaman: I'm pretty sure I used the same XVID settings lavalyn used when he encoded episode 2 on this machine, so I'm not sure what could be confusing it.
