According to a post on AnimeOnDVD, Geneon has sent out a mailer with release information for Saiunkoku DVD 1 (with optional box). As a result we will no longer distribute season 1 or season 2.
This does create an unanticipated situation with respect to the DVDSubber scripts, since the total price of the R1s is expected to be more than the price of the remaining R2s, but the first R1 will be released before the last R2, and the release of the first R1 is our timeframe for stopping distribution of the DVDSubber scripts. If you have been picking up the R2 DVDs, don't worry, we will get you the scripts so you don't have to change horses in mid-stream and end up spending more than you were planning to. For everyone else, Geneon's disc 1 comes out at the end of July, and it looks like it's going to be a 9 disc release. Please support them so they know what kind of anime to finance in the future.

According to a thread on AnimeOnDVD.com - Geneon Entertainment USA has registered the domain saiunkokudvd.com. (You can perform a WHOIS lookup for saiunkokudvd.com.)

While domain acquisition for a series by an North American licensing company may reflect that the company has licensed said series, there exists cases where one company acquires the domain for a series, only for that company to not license that series in R1. Examples:

Funimation has acquired the domain princeoftennis.com a while ago, yet it was Viz who ultimately licensed Prince of Tennis.
In 2004, Funimation picked up the gantz.tv domain. Gantz has now been released in its entirety in R1, by ADV.

In other words, Geneon's acquisition of saiunkokudvd.com should not be treated as a formal announcement that Saiunkoku has been licensed, so We Suck will continue work on Saiunkoku until any formal announcement of an R1 license from any North American licensing company.

However, as an advance notice: if there is any formal announcement of an R1 license from Saiunkoku from any North American licensing company, We Suck will remove all existing episodes of Saiunkoku from distribution, and will not release any outstanding episodes. If that happens, please do support the company who has licensed the series and buy the R1 DVDs!

The scripts for Saiunkoku DVD 1 are now available here. Sorry for the delay, but both myself and arcImpulse had weddings to attend this past weekend, and mine was in a different country and involved being away from home for a week. Note that this script pack contains the episodes, but not the omake from the first pressing version. We do plan to translate that, but we wanted to get the scripts for the episodes released first.
Edit: A quick note I forgot to mention. Apparently the Cyberlink DVD playback filter has a bug where the time code it reports is one second after the actual timecode. Most uses of that filter don't care, but it's relevant in DVDSubber (and presumably ShareCrow) because it means everything appears a second early. Cyberlink makes PowerDVD, and their DVD playback filter is used on HP laptops with the QuickPlay feature. The Saiunkoku script packs will have separate versions of each volume with the Cyberlink label for you to use if this bug affects you. When I make up the next version of the Karin script pack (for disc 8), I'll do the same. If you use the Survive or BPS script packs and this bug affects you, let me know and I'll update those for you too.

It took a little while, with work, exams, and some heavy-duty procrastination, but episode 10 of Tale of Saiunkoku is available. Finally.

It's been a while, but it's errata time. In episode 9, Ensei said he had tried to take the 'junshi', which we translated as Ten Day Exam. This is because there's a word 旬試 pronounced junshi that means ten day exam. This is an actual word. In working on episode 10, we found that the characters used in the novels were 準試. This is not an actual word. As an added bonus, the novels explain the difference between 準試 and 国試 (kokushi), whereas the anime leaves it as an exercise to the imagination. (The difference is that the 国試, the Imperial Examination, is meant for those seeking high level positions in the imperial government, as well as other high positions like provincial governor, whereas the 準試 is for those seeking lower level positions.) After juggling some possible translations that would have been technically correct in a vacuum but that might have had some unintended implications, we've decided on Basic Examination as the translation we'll use going forward, and as the errata to that line in episode 9.

An additional word on the "application form for additional extras" that I have mentioned in the previous post:

The Limited Edition release of each Saiunkoku DVD comes with an application form for additional extras. You can send the application forms for a specific set of DVDs to Frontier Works in exchange for even more bonus goodies. Specifically:

Purchasing Saiunkoku DVD Volumes 1 - 7 (inclusive) Limited Edition and sending in the application forms enclosed in those volumes to Frontier Works will get you an artbox illustrated by Yura Kairi, the illustrator for the Saiunkoku light novels;
Purchasing Saiunkoku DVD Volumes 8 - 13 (inclusive) Limited Edition and sending in the application forms enclosed in those volumes to Frontier Works will get you a second artbox illustrated by Yura Kairi, as well as a mini-novel written by Yukino Sai, the author of the Saiunkoku light novels. (Said mini-novel is in Japanese, however.)

A word of warning, however: While I have not received my copy of Volume 1 yet, it is likely that you will need to send the application forms using a Japanese address. So it's a good idea for you to have a contact with a Japanese address to do the sending for you. (This is similar to the situation with the Karin Volume 1 - 6 LE Boogie-kun puppet extra that Torgen is trying to acquire.)

Which means that Episodes 1 to 3 have been removed from our Bittorrent tracker, as per We Suck's policy of taking down video-based encodes of our fansubs upon the release of legitimate Japanese R2 DVDs (and, of course, upon any North American licensing). DVDSubber scripts will be prepared as soon as I receive the DVD.

I hope I didn't order too late...I'd really love the Limited Edition...

Tale of Saiunkoku DVD Volume 1 will be released on August 4, 2006 in Japan. Volume 1 will contain Episodes 1 to 3. If you purchase the Limited Edition DVD, you'll also receive a CD, as well as exclusive seiyuu interviews.

As per We Suck policy, Episodes 1 to 3 will be removed from our tracker when the DVD comes out. So if you love the series, please do buy the DVDs (they are coded Region 2, so be sure that your DVD player can play Region 2 DVDs). Since the R2 DVDs do not come with English subtitles out of the box (as is the case with most Japanese R2 DVDs), we will produce English subtitle scripts in DVDSubber format, so that you may enjoy the anime at its highest quality while still able to understand the words.

For those that are unfamiliar with DVDSubber:
DVDSubber is a Windows-based DVD player software that overlays subtitles on DVDs that don't originally have them. This is the standard software used by We Suck to produce English-language scripts for use with DVDs. To run DVDSubber, ensure that your operating system is Windows XP or better.

And thus ends my marketing speak. I can never get it down to an art like lavalyn does...;_;

YesAsia added preorder links for every disc in the series (that's 39 episodes split evenly across 13 discs at a rate of one per month), so we've linked them from the sidebar. Once there's non-placeholder art for a disc I'll put it in; it didn't seem helpful to put 13 copies of the same image over there, especially since it wasn't going to be the final art anyways. This does mean that the Karin goods get scrolled down a page, but there's only so much we can do and still have things organized.

Just to let all of you know that we're not dead...

If you have been accustomed to We Suck's historically timely releases, and/or you've been wondering why Tale of Saiunkoku is only up to Episode 3 in our fansubs while Episode 10 has already aired in Japan, there are two reasons...

1) I have a full-time job which involves occasional weekend work - things are particularly busy this week, as there is a project that's finishing up soon and I'm facing crunch time - as well as a social life;
2) I often squander the leftover free-time after 1) is complete.

While 1) is obviously high-priority, 2) is pretty much my fault - and I apologize for that. I will try to avoid procrastinating as much as possible...the World Cup notwithstanding.

As for work on Saiunkoku, rest assured - we (mainly I, since I'm the one who sends the first draft of the script to Torgen and get the fansubbing ball rolling on Saiunkoku) are slowly and steadily working on it.

I'm reporting in from Anime North in Toronto, ON, wondering if any of the viewers of series we've subbed in the past few years are around. Similarly, Torgen is expected to be galomping around Anime Boston at Boston, MA. Good luck finding us, btw, but if you're around, do try.

I am the translator for Tale of Saiunkoku - although Torgen has helped me a lot with translation checking. (Do not be fooled by his 'Misc:' credit in the group credits ticker that he's only doing bit parts on this series.)

Saiunkoku has been a great series so far (one can never have too many severe hottie bishounens kicking around), but since I'm starting out and I have a full-time job, traditional We Suck speed is not guaranteed.

Now that I have gotten the self-introduction out of the way - I have some errata to announce for Episode 1, regarding Kou Shouka's job.

Supposedly HD-DVD has a subtitle download feature. (At least according to AnimeOnDVD, and some guy on some forum.) If anyone knows anything more about this, hopefully including documentation on how to make these downloadable subtitle packs and whether you can make them for regular DVDs or just HD-DVDs, e-mail me.
